Newburn Bakehouse Gluten Free Bread Review

A Newburn Bakehouse loaf and a packet of Mrs Crimbles Macaroons (review of those to follow)

BzzAgent sent me some voucher recently to try out some things from the Tesco Free From Range. One of those things was Newburn Bakehouse Gluten-free bread.
Lets start with the good points, I wasn't really expecting much from gluten free bread, but actually this was really nice. Fabulous texture, nice taste, good for making sandwiches with, didn't fall apart.

As yummy as this was the slices were really small.

However, the loaf is so small! I had two sandwiches and practically massacred the loaf! I've had a look to see if a larger version exists but it appears they don't make a loaf with proper sized slices. Here's to hoping they make one in the future.

Hair of the Day 28/05/2013

No video for this one because I was just playing around with styles I could wear Combthulhu with and came up with this Victorian-esque do. It's a while since I did a video tutorial of my own so I might make one for this later in the week :)

Juliette Et Justine inspired skirt

Super duper simple skirt I whipped up in a few hours, I hope to wear it for a shoot I have penciled in in a few weeks time :)

Veet EasyWax Review

The entire kit that was sent to me to test.

Well we all knew it would happen eventually, I've been using BzzAgent for over a year now and everything they've sent me so far has been fantastic, but the Veet Easywax (seriously whoever named that should probably stop smoking crack) is a complete dud.

I had been really looking forward to this one once I found out that I would be getting it, unfortunately I'm very disappointed with it.

The kit I was sent included two different re-fills, one of legs and a "sensitive" (har-de-har) one for armpits and the bikini area.
I had intended to use both on the same day as the instructions said that it would only take 20 minutes to heat the wax up (clearly whoever named this piece of  Medieval Torture Equipment also made the wild guesses involved in the instructions)...
It took over an hour to heat the leg cartridge, (also it would be handy if there was some kind of indicator, maybe the light could turn off or something?).
This has to have been one of the most painful home waxing kits I have ever used (and I have tried a lot of home waxing kits, I actually prefer waxing my legs because it lasts longer and there's no stubble with most kits, so I can't put this down to n00b ouchies), and my legs are now covered in painful red bumps (totally un-sexy), and the wipes for wiping away the wax residue made my skin itch (not nice, especially when it was already irritated).
 So the leg cartridge?

0/5
Would not buy at full price, on offer or accept for free again.

After the disaster that was the leg waxing cartridge  I decided that I really should be thorough and try the armpit and bikini line one a few days later (because I'd feel like a terrible product tester if I didn't).
Again it took over an hour to heat up, when it did finally heat up, applying the wax was hardly the walk in the park the instructions made it out to be (pro-tip: If you do want to try out the Medieval Torture Device on your underarms, please note that armpits are a weird shape, arms do not bend like they do in the instruction leaflet and this will be much easier if someone helps you), I applied the wax and removal sheet exactly as it said in the instructions and when I pulled away the sheet was in a great deal of pain and found that most of the wax was still on my armpit and there were only three hairs on the sheet.

The wipes for removing the wax felt truly vile on my underarms and didn't really work so they ended up sticking together, when I did finally get all of the wax off I discovered that my armpits were bruised so that wax is going nowhere near my nono place!

Fortunately I also happen to be testing Tesco Free From and Nescafe AZERA as well at the moment, so when my boyfriend came home to find me weeping on the floor with my arms stuck to my sides he made me a nice cuppa and gave me a Mrs Crimbles Macaroon to cheer me up!
(coffee and macaroon reviews to follow).

I feel very guilty for sharing the Amazon discount code on Facebook before I found out how awful and unsafe the product was, but on the off-chance my review hasn't made you run for the hills and you do want to try it out for yourself you can get 50% off by using the code EASYWAX4 before June 30th which can be entered on Amazon.co.uk when you are checking out their order. There is a box called ‘Gift cards & promotional codes’ on the ‘Review Your Order’ page where you can enter the code.

Lolita 52 Challenge - Week 17 - My first meetup

Whitby

I have no pictures from it (because I'm made of fail sometimes), but my very first meet as a few years ago at Whitby Goth Weekend. There were just a few of us in Sherlock's tea rooms and it was a nice little experience.

Adventures in blouse making!

I've tried to make blouses a few times and they've never quite worked out right, so yesterday the always wonderful Queenie helped me out with some bits and bobs where I've been going wrong (and let me have a play with her embroidery machine (I sooooo want one of those beauties in my life!)

First image from the Alter-ed Ego Bridal Shoot

Pretty happy with how this looks, and I quite like how the lighting almost makes it look like I'm floating(I was wearing pony boots, you can see the platforms if you look for them, but if you quickly glance I look like I'm hovering)!
There will of course be more photos to follow :)

Lolita 52 Challenge - Week 15 - 3 things I wish I was told when I was a new Lolita

1. Lolitas are not all bitches.

2. No matter how much you think someone is your friend, when they lie about you, steal from you and then drop you over the internet drama that they caused for you, they are not your friend.

3. You can rise above that drama, and just like you wanted, dress in pretty clothes and visit tea shops with like-minded people.

Eai Eai Combthulhu F'tagan!

Finally have my Birthday present from Kev :)
It's a Bronze Octopus hair fork, handmade by BronzeSmith on Etsy.
It was held to ransom by customs so it ended up costing £11 more than we thought it would, but it's a very lovely piece, and seems to hold a bun well so I'm pretty happy with it :)

Virtual Vegan Potluck - Kiwi Upside Down Cake

Sexy cake...UNF!

I'm delighted to be a part of the third Virtual Vegan Potluck (this is my second, I participated back in November and you can find my Butternut Squash Risotto recipe here).
This time my recipe is a little sweeter, good for guilty pleasures, family dinners (with warm custard or soya cream), parties or even just afternoon tea with my fellow frillies (for anybody who isn't a regular reader and has just found this post via the potluck, I dress in Gothic Lolita, and my friends and I do enjoy dressing up in frills and having a spot of tea and cake now and then).

Please be aware this cake rises A LOT so make sure you have a big enough tin, otherwise it's weird-shaped cake ahoy!

Ingredients
(kiwi topping)
1/2 cup of Vegan Margarine
1/2 cup of sugar
2-3 firm kiwi fruit

(cake)
2+1/2 cups of all purpose flour
1+1/3 cups of sugar
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 cup of strong black tea (let the bag steep for at least 10 minutes)
1 cup of soya milk
1 teaspoon of almond extract (optional)
1 large mashed banana

The kiwi topping prior to the cake batter being added

Method

pre-heat over to 350F/ 180C/ Gas Mark 4

Peel and chop the kiwis into thin slices

On a low heat melt the margarine and sugar together in a small pan, (please don't try to do other things at this point, the first time I tried to make this cake I chopped the fruit while I was making the syrup and while my eyes were off the pan it burnt).

Pour your syrup into your cake tin (if you're using a traditional tin you'll need to grease it first but if you're using a silicone one you won't), and then evenly lay out the kiwi slices so that they cover the bottom of the tin.

In a large bowl combine the flour, sugar and baking powder before slowly adding in the tea, soya milk, mashed banana and almond extract a little at a time whilst stirring to prevent lumps.

pour the cake batter into the tin on top of the kiwi and syrup mixture and then bake in the oven for 50 minutes - and hour or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Wait until completely cooled before turning out onto a large plate.
Enjoy!

Important note: All fixed now :)

Siouxsie Sioux inspired look at this month's group shoot

This month's group shoot was punk themed, and so I decided my look would be influenced by Siouxsie Sioux for this one (yes I know she's more known for being the queen of Goth but she started out as a Punk!)

I learned the hard way that thigh high boots should not be worn outdoors on cobbled streets!

Above three photos by Shot to Bits Photography

There are plenty more photos from this shoot to go up, but I won't be sharing them here, so if you're interested in seeing them you should go like my page on Facebook, which has regular updates on my modelling :)
I have a very exciting shoot coming up as well as an interview on another blog :)

Warehouse Shoot

Now that I'm back online I can share a few of my favourites from the shoot in the abandoned warehouse I did last friday!

This shoot took place in Sunderland with JMH Photography

I think we look kind of like a band in this one!

I decided to do something a little different this time.... No corsets or Lolita!

The rest of the shoot can be found on Jason's page (linked above) or mine: Alexandria Web
